What are adjectives and why learn them?

 

Handsome, pretty, big, small, green, tall, amazing, bright … Do you recognize these words?

 

These words are called ADJECTIVES and they help us to make exact descriptions of the people, places and things that surround us.

 

Look at the following example:

 

– Roberto is a very sincere and understanding boy .

 

In the previous example, the words sincere and understanding describe how Roberto is. They are adjectives.

Therefore, adjectives are variable words that accompany names to talk about their characteristics.

 

ALWAYS match the accompanying names in gender (male or female) and number (singular or plural) .

 

Look at the following example:

 

– Laura has a beautiful house in the country. (fem. singular)

– Luis lives with three beautiful dogs in his country house. (plural masc.)

 

As you can see, the PRECIOUS adjective changes if you have a female / male or singular / plural word in front of you.

 

Also , there are adjectives that do not change form by gender (masculine / feminine) but only by number (singular / plural), as in the following example:

 

– She is a very intelligent student . vs. My sisters are very smart .

– This guy is very happy . vs. His brothers are also very happy .

– terminated in -e → compliant

(obedient boy or obedient girl)

– finished in -z → happy

(happy woman; happy man)

– finished in -i → Moroccan

(Amira is Moroccan but he is not Moroccan)

– finished in -u → Hindu .

(Lucas is Hindu but his mother is not Hindu.)

– finished in consonant → difficult, familiar, easy .

(Ana is familiar, Juan is familiar)

– cardinals → two, three, five .
